DIY Olive Oil Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

Everyone knows that olive oil has tons of health benefits!

It’s full of healthy fats that may reduce inflammation and possibly even reduce the risk of chronic disease. The anti-inflammatory benefits of olive oil are thought to possibly help prevent cancer, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.

Some studies have also shown a direct link between olive oil consumption and a lower risk of stroke!

But you may not realize that olive oil has beneficial uses beyond health and cooking!

I have very long, extremely thick hair that is pretty unruly even on the best of hair days. One of the things that helps make it more manageable is to keep it well conditioned.

Fortunately, there are a handful of products you probably have in your pantry that work just as well (if not better!) than any chemical-filled deep conditioning treatment you could get at the salon.

One of those is olive oil! (Check out my favorite olive oil brand here!)

Ready to give it a try?

1. Start with damp, towel-dried hair.

Make sure you use warm water – it will open hair cuticles and allow the oil to penetrate easily!

2. For my long hair I use about 1/4 cup to coat everything. If you have short hair or long but fine hair, you may only need a couple of tablespoons.

3. Apply the oil.

Avoid your roots if your hair tends to get oily!

I like to twist up sections of my hair with hair ties or clips and apply it to one section at a time. You can use your fingers but I’ve found that a cheap mens comb is more efficient (and less messy!)

Remember you only want to lightly apply it, don’t soak your hair or it will be difficult to wash out.

4. I also recommend using a shower cap once you’ve finished applying the oil!

You don’t need to do this but I definitely think it helps the oil to penetrate the hair cuticles!

5. Leave it on for at least 3-4 hours before washing it out. It wouldn’t hurt to leave it on all day or overnight though!

Enjoy your shiny, manageable, frizz-free hair!

Tip: If you got a little too heavy-handed with the olive oil and are having trouble washing it out, you can use 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar! Simply rinse your hair with the vinegar and allow it to set for about ten minutes before rinsing.
